Screening for Gynecologic Infections

Screening for Gynecologic Infections

A variety of infections may affect the genital tract and can be tested for. They range from an overgrowth of normal bacteria that colonizes in the genital tract to sexually transmitted infections. Testing for infection is always appropriate in patients with vaginal discharge that causes irritation or has a foul odor. Sexually active women may desire screening for sexually transmitted infections, most commonly Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. This screening can be done at time of pap smear, or can be tested for in the urine.
